How to Get the Best Signal with Your Satellite Dish
![]() |
Thanks to today's sophisticated, compact satellite dishes and advanced receivers, it's easier than ever to get a clear television picture. If you've got satellite television from a provider like DirecTV or Dish Network, you probably won't have to worry too much about adjusting your dish for a clear signal. Usually, a professional will come to your home and install your satellite television dish and receiver for you, set it up, and instruct you on proper use. If you've got questions, you can always refer to your instruction manual or call the toll-free customer service number you will be provided.
However, there may be some times when you need to know how to obtain or receive a signal with your dish. Setting up a satellite dish yourself can be an in-depth procedure that requires knowledge and expertise. If you want to attempt this, you'll first need to make sure your dish has a clear path to the satellite. This means you will need to know the dish pointing coordinates. To obtain those coordinates, it is first necessary to hook up the satellite receiver to your television and use the menu on the screen. After you've acquired your coordinates and installed your satellite dish, you may need to fine tune the signal.
The first step of fine tuning the signal of your satellite dish is verifying that the elevation indicator is set correctly and verifying the azimuth setting is also correct. Then, you'll want to bring up the Dish Pointing Menu on your screen and make sure you are receiving a satellite signal. If you are getting a signal but need to adjust it, you'll want to check the instruction manual that came with your satellite dish for pointing instructions. You might also need to adjust the azimuth setting on your dish.
While it is possible to install and tune your satellite dish and signal on your own, it's much faster and easier to have a professional do it. With television providers such as DirecTV and Dish Network, there are experienced personnel trained to do all this for you. Often you can get free installation of your equipment when you purchase a satellite television package. If you have questions or problems with your satellite television, it's usually best to contact your provider for troubleshooting and/or repair.
